TEACHING
PHILOSOPHY
My focus as a teacher has been art, new media, script analysis
and the documentary tradition. I enjoy sharing ideas with students and helping students explore their personal histories and
document cultural icons and events. I have taught studio and field media production to all levels of undergraduate students. Projects in my
classes can range from traditional script-based narratives to intuitive visual works. In my approach, the best possible realization
of student projects is a goal. Students are encouraged to exhibit their
work throughout
the production process in my classes. We move from conceptual stages in pre-production through site or lab production and
post-production. I encourage students to experiment and learn from approaches that did not work. I require
my students to move on with their productions to the release and exhibit stage, even if it is only in the classroom at the
term’s end.
I have encouraged
students who have completed superior projects to enter the projects in professional festivals and showcases, and work with
them in preparing their entries. Several
have won awards at regional and international festivals.
For eight years, at New York University, I have developed
and taught an original interdisciplinary humanities course, “The Politics of Portraiture”. The
course, which focuses on the role of the icon in the timeline of human history and social evolution, is open to the entire university. Project samples are available at (www.donnacameron.info)
I am also experienced in teaching Studio and Field Television Production, 16mm and super-8 mm Film Production, 35mm,
Medium and Large Format Black and White Photography, Digital Photography, Multimedia Computer Workshops, Documentary Video
and Film Production, BFA Media Studies Thesis Production and Computer Graphics, as well as workshops using Adobe Suite software,
Final Cut Pro, Macromedia Director, and HTML. In addition to teaching, I have served as an academic advisor for several years.
I have also advised a program for off-campus activity entitled “Faculty In and Of The City”, in which a team of
professors design cultural excursions in order to help foreign students become integrated into the local community.
My teaching philosophy
embraces the entire campus experience for the student. I generally include visits to
my studio as part of my courses. As part of these visits and in out of
classroom dialogues, I try to give my students a sense of the responsibilities of being an effective contemporary artist.
As a film/video maker, I know that unforeseen issues often arise and I encourage them to feel free to contact me in these
challenging and unpredictable moments, even if it is outside of scheduled office hours.
